Why ChatGPT doesn't recommend your business

The common reasons ChatGPT names your competitors instead of you, and how to check each one on your own site.

Ask ChatGPT for the best option in your category and your town, and it names three or four businesses. If yours is not one of them, the cause is usually one of a short list, and most of them are on your own site.

1. ChatGPT’s crawler cannot reach your site

ChatGPT search reads pages through OpenAI’s OAI-SearchBot. If your robots.txt disallows it, or your host’s firewall turns AI agents away, ChatGPT cannot read or cite you, and it fills the answer with businesses it can read.

Check: run the AI crawler checker. It tests both robots.txt and firewall blocks.

2. Your homepage is empty without JavaScript

Sites built with some page builders and app frameworks send a nearly blank page and fill it in with JavaScript. People see the full site. AI crawlers, which mostly skip JavaScript, see almost nothing.

Check: the free scan shows a crawler’s eye view of your homepage: the exact text an AI crawler receives.

3. It cannot tell what you do or where

AI engines describe you from your own words. A homepage that leads with a slogan (“Coffee for slow mornings”) leaves them guessing. One plain sentence fixes it: what you are, for whom, and where.

Check: read the first two sentences on your homepage as a stranger would. Do they say what you sell and where?

4. Your business facts are missing or inconsistent

Structured data such as LocalBusiness or Organization states your name, address, hours and services in a form machines read without guessing. When it is missing, or your name and phone differ across pages, engines trust other sources about you instead.

Check: the schema checker shows what your homepage declares.

5. Other sites describe your competitors more

When ChatGPT answers from memory rather than live search, it leans on how often and how consistently a business is mentioned across the web: reviews, local guides, press, directories. This is the slowest factor to change, and the reason the first four matter: they control what AI learns from your own site.

6. Your pages do not answer the question

AI answers quote pages that answer directly. If a customer asks “how much does a coffee subscription cost” and your site never states a price, ChatGPT will quote someone who does.

How to find out which one it is

Asking ChatGPT once tells you little, because answers vary by phrasing and day. A better test asks several engines several versions of the question, separates answers from memory and live search, and then asks the engine why it left you out. AI Search Analyzer does this, and checks each reason the engine gives against your actual site, so you only fix what is really missing.
