Three acronyms now describe one job: getting found when someone looks for what you sell. SEO is ranking in search results. AEO, answer engine optimization, is being the answer a search engine or assistant quotes. GEO, generative engine optimization, is being named when ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude or Perplexity write an answer of their own.
They aren’t rivals. Most of the work is shared, and a site that does well at one usually has a head start on the other two. The differences are in what “winning” looks like and in a few checks that only one of them needs.
The short version
| Compare | SEO | AEO | GEO |
|---|---|---|---|
| Goal | Rank in the list of links | Be quoted as the answer | Be named in an AI-written answer |
| Where it shows | Google and Bing results | Featured snippets, AI Overviews, voice assistants | ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Perplexity, AI Overviews |
| What decides it | Relevance, links, page quality, speed | A clear, direct answer on a page that already ranks | What the model remembers, plus the pages it reads live |
| How you measure it | Rankings, clicks | Whether you’re the cited source | How often you’re named, and whether what’s said is true |
| Who can read your site | Googlebot, Bingbot | The same, plus assistants’ fetchers | AI search crawlers, which mostly don’t run JavaScript |
What is SEO?
Search engine optimization is the work of ranking well for the searches your customers make. It covers technical health (pages that load, can be crawled and aren’t blocked), relevance (a page that matches the search), authority (links and mentions from other sites) and experience (speed, mobile layout). The reward is a position in a list, and a click if your title earns it.
SEO is still the base layer. Google’s AI Overviews draw on pages that already rank, and ChatGPT search leans on Bing’s index. A site search engines can’t read is a site AI can’t read either.
What is AEO?
Answer engine optimization is getting your page chosen as the answer: the featured snippet, the source an AI Overview cites, the line a voice assistant reads out. In marketing, AEO usually means shaping pages around the questions customers ask, with the answer stated plainly near the top.
The difference from SEO is the prize. With SEO you can be third and still get clicks. With AEO there is usually one answer, maybe two cited sources, and the rest get nothing.
- 1cedarandpine.coffee
- 2hearthroasting.com
- 4fernwayroasters.com
What helps:
- A question as a heading, and a one or two sentence answer right below it.
- Lists and tables for steps and comparisons.
- FAQ and HowTo structured data that matches what’s on the page.
- Nothing that keeps the answer out, such as a
nosnippettag or content that only appears after scripts run.
What is GEO?
Generative engine optimization is getting AI tools to mention your business, describe it correctly, and recommend it. When someone asks ChatGPT “which accountant in Austin handles small businesses?”, there is no page two. The answer names three or four firms, and GEO is the work of being one of them.
Here are three good options:
- Cedar & Pine for single origins
- Hearth Roasting for espresso
- Rosewood Coffee for subscriptions
GEO has two parts SEO and AEO don’t:
- What the model remembers. An AI tool answers partly from training. That reflects how often and how consistently your business is described across the web, in reviews, directories, news and your own pages.
- Whether what it says is true. AI tools get facts wrong: old prices, closed locations, services you never offered. Part of GEO is finding those mistakes and fixing the pages they come from.

GEO vs SEO: the real differences
- A list vs a sentence. SEO wins a position; GEO wins a mention. Being ranked fifth still counts. Being left out of an AI answer counts as zero.
- Links vs consistency. Links still matter for both, but AI answers reward being described the same way in many places: your name, what you do, where, and for whom.
- Crawlers. AI search crawlers such as OAI-SearchBot and PerplexityBot are separate from Googlebot, and most of them read raw HTML without running JavaScript. A site can rank well in Google and be invisible to them. See which AI crawlers to allow.
- Measurement. Rank trackers don’t see AI answers. You have to ask the AI tools the questions your customers ask, the same way each week, and count.
AEO vs SEO
AEO is the narrow end of SEO. It needs a page that already ranks, then shapes the answer on that page so it gets quoted. If your SEO is weak, AEO has nothing to work with. If your SEO is strong but your pages bury the answer under a long intro, AEO is the quickest gain you have.
AEO vs GEO
The two overlap the most, which is why people use the terms loosely. The useful line: AEO is about being the quoted source for one question, mostly in Google; GEO is about being part of how AI tools think about your whole category, across several tools. AEO is page by page. GEO also depends on the rest of the web.
Which one do you need?
All three, in this order:
- SEO basics first. Crawlable, fast, no broken links, a clear title on every page. Nothing else works without it.
- AEO on your best pages. Turn your most important questions into headings with direct answers, and add matching FAQ structured data.
- GEO on top. Let AI search crawlers in, make your business facts consistent everywhere, and check what each AI tool says about you every week.
- ChatGPT4
- Gemini3
- Claude2
- Perplexity2
How to check all three at once
A free scan from AI Search Analyzer runs the SEO audit, checks which AI crawlers can read your site, and shows what ChatGPT says about your business, in about 30 seconds. The AI Overviews checker covers the answer box side, and the AEO tool explains how weekly tracking works on paid plans.
