AI Overviews are the AI-written summaries at the top of many Google results, with links to the pages they draw on. Being one of those links is the AI version of ranking first.
Google’s own guidance is unusually plain about how to get there: a page must be indexed and eligible to be shown in Google Search with a snippet. Google says there are no extra requirements, no special files and no special structured data needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode.
So the work is classic search work, done well. Here is what decides it.
1. Googlebot can crawl and index the page
AI Overviews are built from Google’s search index, which Googlebot fills. A robots.txt rule that blocks Googlebot, a noindex tag, or a page that returns an error keeps you out of both regular results and AI Overviews.
Google-Extended is a separate control. Google says it decides whether your pages are used to train Gemini and for grounding in Gemini apps, and that it does not affect inclusion or ranking in Google Search. Blocking Google-Extended does not remove you from AI Overviews.
2. Snippets are allowed
AI Overviews quote from pages. If a page uses nosnippet, a very short max-snippet, or wraps its main text in data-nosnippet, Google has less or nothing to quote. These settings sometimes come from an SEO plugin default nobody remembers turning on.
3. The page is the best answer to the question
AI Overviews favor pages that answer the question directly and specifically. Put the answer near the top, under a heading that matches what people ask. Keep facts current: dates, prices and versions that are out of date make a page a weaker source.
4. The basics are clean
Titles and descriptions that match the page, a working canonical, fast loading on phones, and no broken links. None of these are AI-specific, and all of them help Google trust the page.
